CNN recently released a top 10 list of the world's top employers for new grads, which are as follows: .

1. Google

2. PwC

3. EY

4. Goldman Sachs

5. KPMG

6. Deloitte

7. Apple

8. Microsoft

9. JP Morgan

10. Procter and Gamble

Google, of course, tops the list. We all know what it offers as it was also highlighted in the movie, "The Internship". Similar with the companies on the list, it offers a lot to employees. Free meals, onsite gyms, flexible working schedules, onsite salons, international trainings, astounding leave credits, travels and other perks.

Basically, when we think of great places to work, we automatically focus on the benefits that make it more fun, convenient or flexible. But if you start working not just on these workplaces, but on any place, you will soon realize that pay and all those perks alone do not automatically define a great workplace.

A great workplace relies on the culture of the company where trust and engagement unites both workforce and management through a common vision. China Gorman, CEO of the Great Place to Work Institute (the consulting and research firm behind Fortune Magazine's annual 100 Best Companies to work for list) said, "Culture should be intentional and people-centric".

Culture is not built within a day. It takes a lot of work, commitment and passion from the highest person in management down to the ranks. This is not textbook material and surely is not an easy thing to accomplish. It requires leaders who are committed and can communicate properly to the members. It takes a lot of work but the results are great as an engaged workforce will lead to better financial performance. Moreover, a great work place will lead to great talents.

To list down the things that make a great workplace, here are some things to consider and assess in your own organization:

To Be Able to Trust and Be Trusted

- Employees trust their management to lead the company to its full growth potential and that they will look out for their people

- Management must also trust employees to decide proactively in support of the business and customers

- Family-like concern: all regard each other as "family", having each other's back

An Engaged Workforce

- All employees of great workplaces are invested in the well-being of the business and the organization

- Beyond profits, revenues and sales, all employees feel that they are part of a greater mission; that when the company is successful, everyone knows that they have contributed something to that success.

Transparent Leaders

They say that people leave not because of the company but mostly because of their bosses or the management. In a great workplace, leaders are transparent enough to:

- Be open about everything regarding the business, including problems and not just successes

- Be easy to approach and are accessible

- Seek opinions or feedback (maybe through surveys, etc.) on challenges

Frequent, Sincere and Deep Communication

- The culture and practices of the company should not be defined by management alone but has to be consulted by everyone involved

- Communication is constant

- Conversations between managers and employees must take place on a regular basis

- Whether good or bad feedback, communication is done on a sincere intent of the betterment of the individual, organization and the company

Vision/Mission/ Intent

- Great cultures begin with the vision of a passionate advocate. As an example, Apple had Steve Jobs. All that Apple is today, sprung forth form the advocacy and passion of Steve Jobs. Even in Jobs' death, Apple knows where it is going. Steve's legacy lives on.

- This vision/mission/intent should not just be posted on bulletin boards but has to be practiced. It requires continual attention of everyone from the CEO to ranks.

In summary, more than the façade of great perks, take a look at what the culture of the company is. Take a look at what they are preaching and their values and make sure that they are in congruence with yours. For if it is, you may have just found a great workplace to be in.
