With June nearing its end, there is still no word on who Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will be facing this coming September which (according to him) may be the last fight of his career.
The belief is that British boxer Amir Khan has the inside track but such has yet to be made official.
Khan did mention that he had an animated conversation with Floyd Mayweather, Sr. a few days back, though such cannot be considered a formality.
Hence, until Mayweather actually names his supposed “solid” opponent, expect a lot of fighters throwing in their names to the pot.
Just recently, Shawn Porter joined the mix as he called out Mayweather Jr. to face him. Porter is coming off a unanimous decision win over Adrian Broner and believes he is worthy to be in the ring this coming September.
Porter seems to be trying to follow the footsteps of Marcos Maidana who incidentally handed Broner his first loss. Maidana got the nod and faced Mayweather twice but losing on both occasions.
But take it from Mayweather himself, his opponent for September 12 will not be Shawn Porter.
How about Keith Thurman?
Thurman is undefeated and is set to face Luiz Collazo on July 11. He will be defending his WBA welterweight title at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida and is considered one of the top contenders in the welterweight division.
Despite the credibility of both Porter and Spence, rising welterweight Errol Spence (who Mayweather suggested as an opponent for Porter in the undercard of his planned September fight) believes that Khan has the edge over the rest.
I think [Porter is] close. I think probably [he needs] one more fight. I think if he fights Amir Khan or somebody, and beats Amir Khan or somebody like me, he will be in the Floyd sweepstakes. I don't think [Thurman] is there like Amir Khan. He's there, but he's not there,” Spence was quoted as saying by BoxingScene.com.
In the end, it may all boil down to experience - an edge that Amir Khan obviously holds over Porter and Thurman.
Though nothing has come out in the open, it remains that Khan is the frontrunner unless Mayweather has someone in mind which the grapevine is withholding. And from the looks of it, there is none.
The only thing that remains right now is the official announcement. On who and when that will be announced lies in the hands of one man – Floyd Mayweather Jr.
