Mark Zuckerberg and his wife announced a $5 million donation to thedream.us, which will help undocumented scholars receive college education. The announcement is posted on Zuckerberg's Facebook account. In less than 24 hours, the post has already generated over 100,000 likes and more than 8,000 shares.
Zuckerberg wrote that hundreds of the young immigrants studying in the United States moved early in their lives. However without the proper documents and access to any form of federal aid, it will be difficult for them to get college education, he said.
"America was founded as a nation of immigrants. We ought to welcome smart and hardworking young people from every nation, and to help everyone in our society achieve their full potential," Zuckerberg explains in the post.
This is not the first time that Zuckerberg donated to thedream.us, a national program that focuses on providing scholarships to undocumented immigrants that arrived in the United State when they were still young. The Zuckerbergs' donation will help over 400 undocumented students in the San Francisco Bay area for the next five years.
The Facebook founder and his wife seem to have made it a practice to help local communities. Just last February, the couple donated $75 million to San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center to help complete the hospital's acute care and trauma center, create ambulatory care facility from its existing building and purchase new equipment and technology, Mashable reported.
In 2013, Classy.org reported that the couple and others have also donated about $1 billion worth of shares of Facebook to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The foundation's purpose is to help other nonprofit organizations that work in health care, education and the environment.
