Will the coming boxing match between Adrien Broner and Shawn Porter be better than the controversial May 2 fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao?
It seems that the much acclaimed “Fight of the Century” has become a yardstick these days and the good thing about it is that future fights want to improve on that moniker.
Everyone knows that a planned Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez bout promises to do better (and cheaper) than the May 2 fight but before that happens, a boxing match this coming Saturday has likewise promised to do so.
Porter will try to erase the stigma of a defeat at the hands of Kell Brook in August of last year when he faces a dangerous Broner this Sunday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Broner and Porter will square off in a 144-pount catchweight 12-round match in what promises to be an exciting match with both fighters coming off wins.
Porter is coming off an impressive fifth round knockout of Erick Bone last March 13, 2015 while Broner scored a unanimous decision win on John Molina Jr. last March 7, 2015.
Hence, the Sunday tussle should be interesting to see as both fighters try to ride on the momentum and look for another victory to add to their records.
Porter totes a 25-1-1 boxing card where 16 were one via KO while Broner is 30-1-0, 22 by KO.
Broner is riding on the momentum of a three fight winning streak after bowing to Marcos Maidana in December 14, 2013 and Porter knows what he is up against.
“This is an exciting time for team Porter and exciting for myself. I have been looking forward to this fight since it was announced. We just had Mayweather and Pacquiao, now we have Porter and Broner. I will like to do some things that night that will make you guys say this fight was way better than Mayweather and Pacquiao,” Porter said during the LA press conference.
For his part, Broner believes that he is in for a tough fight with Porter but nevertheless believed that he will come out on top.
“Even if it’s a hard fight, I’m going to win this fight. They say he’s strong, they say he comes like a bulldozer, it don’t matter. Whatever they bring to the table on June 20, I’m ready,” Broner said.
At the end of the day and after all their brash talk, there is no bad blood between the two.
Porter and Broner both hail from Ohio and grew up together in the amateurs.
“It’s just a business,” says Broner.
All that could change this Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when both fighters enter the ring, ironically the same stage where Mayweather and Pacquiao fought.
The fight is set for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET and 5:30 p.m. PT and will be shown live via NBC
