Like most players who intend to check out NBA Free Agency, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade would rather cross the bridge when he gets there.
Wade, currently a part of ABC’s coverage of the 2015 NBA Finals, is focused on the task at hand and may probably start thinking of free agency only starting next month.
"Well, listen, it's summer time," Wade said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "So when summer time and free agency [come together], it's going to be a lot of talk. And right now, I'm glad that the Finals is going and we're here.
Wade was supposed to enter the final year of his $31 million contract with the Heat and would have been guaranteed $16.1 million had he opted in. And as many know by now, Wade has decided to test free agency and listen to other teams.
The long-time Heat guard has spent all of his 12 NBA seasons with the Miami Heat. But in what many felt was surprising, Wade decided to check out what other teams could offer him though it is no guarantee that the Heat would lose him.
On the other side, however, there is no guarantee that the Heat would be keeping him too.
It is believed that Wade will be looking for a long-term deal. At a budding age of 33 years, Wade has been hampered by all sorts of injury which have apparently tied up with his athletic brand of basketball.
With his playing years fast catching up, Wade is believed to be looking out for his future and security. In short, he wants a longer deal and maybe another shot at winning an NBA title.
After Wade revealed he would check out free agency, it was not surprising to hear that multiple teams would be interested in pitching to the All Star guard.
Among the teams rumored to be interested in Wade include the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and of course the Cleveland Cavaliers where his buddy Lebron James went after leaving South Beach last season.
The Heat are still in the game for Wade though their hesitance on giving him a long-term deal could become a problem for Pat Riley.
In the same article from the Sun Sentinel, Wade did not hide his desire to get back into the NBA Finals.
"You know what? Since 2006, when we were there for the first time," he said of the Heat's championship-series debut, "I've been every year to the Finals. I always go. Sometimes I sit down there. I just want to feel it. I just want to be a part of it. I've been blessed to go five times. But I go every year."
After losing James to the Cleveland Cavaliers this year, the Heat haven’t been the same.
The Heat did land players like Josh McRoberts, Danny Granger, Luol Deng and later on Goran Dragic but the new recruits weren’t able to jell in time and hence led to the elimination of the team from the NBA Finals.
Then there was the untimely sidelining of Chris Bosh due to blood clots in his lungs, further adding to the woes of the Heat’s 2014-15 campaign.
So has Wade given up?
Not totally perhaps. While he does yearn for another NBA Finals appearance, it is also about his future, probably his last contract depending on how he holds up.
So he could leave Miami or not and a lot of that would depend on which team could give him what he wants – security and a possible shot at another NBA title.
