World-class boxing coach Freddie Roach is confident that Miguel Cotto can defeat Floyd Mayweather.
Should the two big boxing names choose to be up against each other on the ring once more, Roach is confident that the Puerto Rican boxer can defeat "The Money," GMA Network reports. Cotto, with a record of 40 wins and four loses, may have a chance to blemish Mayweather's zero-loss record. The two boxing athletes faced each other back in 2012 but Cotto failed to win against the American boxer due to a "lopsided unanimous decision."
Last month, Roach's most publicized student, Manny Pacquaio, lost against Mayweather via a controversial unanimous decision. Moreover, what was dubbed as the "biggest fight of the century" turned out to be a big disappointment.
"It's a tough fight (referring to a Mayweather rematch), but I do think Miguel's big enough and strong enough to beat him. We'd have to fight a perfect fight, but I think we're very capable of doing that," Roach said.
Cotto has won an impressive three-fight streak ever since Roach joined his Puerto Rican team. His latest victory was against Australian boxer Daniel Geale which led to his presumed upcoming fight with junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Business Insider reports that if the Cotto - Alvarez fight pushes through, it might be the biggest fight since the just concluded Pacquaio - Mayweather battle.
"It's a fight everyone wants to see. It's the fight we're going to make. We have the framework of a deal done. Obviously, we had to wait until tonight was over, but now we can focus on Canelo and Miguel's next fight, and we're looking forward to it," president of Roc Nation Sports Michael Yormack said.
The magazine added that the Cotto - Alvarez fight might bring the excitement that wasn't delivered by the lackluster Mayweather - Pacquaio match. Another person who believes that Cotto will reign supreme when faced against Alvarez is his promoter, Oscar De la Hoya.
"The fight between Cotto and Canelo is huge. It's the biggest fight in boxing after Mayweather-Pacquiao. But the difference is that with Cotto-Canelo, you are guaranteed action. There's no other way around it. You're guaranteed action, and that's what people want to see," De La Hoya said.
However, these are all hints and rumors and nothing has been made final. But merit goes to both fighters who are considered two of the most powerful boxers in sports.
