LeBron James' right hand man is allegedly keeping a close eye on Johnny Football to ensure that he maintains his focus on the NFL and the Cleveland Browns.
Cleveland.com reported that Donte Whitner, the safety for the Browns, said on May 26, 2015 that Maverick Carter, LeBron's business partner and right hand man, is helping the team's quarterback Johnny Manziel stay on track.
Whitner shared, "He's taken a big responsibility in making sure that Johnny's doing all the right things. (Manziel) has a mentor, somebody to talk to, certain things that he really didn't have the ability (to do) or somebody to talk to before. It looks like it's working out so far.''
"We don't really have to say anything. He's been doing that any way. I remember last (year) they made a big fuss about Johnny being in Vegas for Memorial Day Weekend. Johnny was here in Cleveland for Memorial day weekend this year. So that's another step that he's taken," Whitner continued.
Josh McCown is likely to start as quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in the 2015 NFL season. Los Angeles Times cited that Manziel was at the OTAs as second-string quarterback. In the meantime, Manziel has been spending less time in clubs and more time with Whitner, Carter or Joe Haden, who are great influencers for him to stay straight and focused on his game and to get better.
Whitner also told Cleveland.com that Manziel is still very young and he understood the mistakes he made in the past. He is currently taking the necessary steps to stay out of trouble and being more responsible as a team quarterback. Whitner said that Manziel has been consistent at present and was even spending extra hours to workout.
McCown is also mentoring Manziel at present, saying that the young quarterback is developing. He added that the player has to take it one day at a time and that he was proud of how the latter was performing in the past few days. He said that Johnny Football is learning how to embrace his role well and it has been good working with him.
Regardless of who will become starting quarterback in the new season, McCown added that the Browns will move forward together in one direction. Even their teammates have been impressed with how Manziel has been working out on the field and mingling with them during breaks.
"It doesn't take anything away from our group and it doesn't take away from what Johnny and Thad (Lewis) and Connor (Shaw) are doing. We're all working together," McCown said.
