Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney showed slight improvement among registered and likely voters, widening his lead over President Barack Obama among likely voters, Friday's Gallup Daily tracking report revealed. The president also took some major hits to his approval and disapproval ratings, losing any gains he had made earlier this week.
The newly released results show a total loss of any positive changes President Obama has seen in recent days. The GOP challenger closed the one-point gap between the two candidates among registered voters, tying with Obama at 48 percent. Obama had retaken the lead among registered voters on Wednesday after trailing behind Romney since at least last week.
Among likely voters, the gap between the candidates widened after Romney received a one-point boost to 51 percent and Obama suffered a one-point loss to 46 percent. Obama began to see improvements among likely voters on Monday when Romney started seeing some declines in support. He further closed the gap on Wednesday, when he rose up to 47 percent. Romney previously held a consistent six-point lead in the past two weeks.
Other national election polls remain consistent with Gallup's findings, placing the Republican candidate squarely in the lead among likely voters. On Friday, Rasmussen Reports placed Romney ahead of Obama by three points and ABC News/Washington Post paced him ahead by a one-point margin. Thursday's Reuters/Ipsos Daily Election tracking also showed the GOP candidate in the lead with 47 percent to Obama's 46 percent.
The Gallup Daily tracking report also revealed that Obama took big hits to both his approval and disapproval ratings. The president's approval rating, which hit a high of 53 percent on Wednesday, hit below 50 percent on Friday dropping three points in the last 24 hours to 48 percent.
Obama's disapproval rating also rose significantly on Friday, up three points from the previous day to 47 percent. The president hit a low of 42 percent disapproval rating on Wednesday, a day that demonstrated overall positive changes for him in the election polls conducted by Gallup.
Romney and Obama have just 12 days to continue their state-to-state and television appearances to rally supporters' support and woo in undecided voters. The latest electoral votes prediction by Latinos Post show President Obama in the slight lead with 201 electoral voters over Romney's 191 electoral votes. However, 146 electoral votes from key swing states still remain to be decided.
