What was supposed to be the "Fight of the Century" on May 2, turned out to be one of the most boring bouts in the history of boxing, making a rematch almost impossible.
Cork Gaines of Business Insider wrote that it is unlikely that the two will ever meet in the ring again. Usually, a rematch is borne out of an exciting first fight. The match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. was nowhere near exciting. Second, the rematch is usually bigger and more lucrative than the first fight. Many of those who paid big bucks to see the event live claimed that the long-awaited Pacquiao-Mayweather bout was a complete waste of time and money. It is unlikely that people would pay the same or even bigger sums to watch two fighters, way past their primes, have a glorified sparring match.
Gaines added that if a fight between the two stars happened three to five years ago, a rematch would have been feasible. Pacquiao is already 36 years old, and his contract with HBO and Top Rank ends at the end of 2016. Mayweather is 38, with one fight left on his contract with Showtime, his last before retiring.
There are other complex matters that would reportedly make a rematch between the two far from happening. Their separate networks, HBO and Showtime, previously had to collaborate to co-broadcast the huge event. Also, an agreement with the MGM Grand was delayed, resulting to delayed distribution of tickets. Finally, fans do not seem to want a rematch. Even after Pacquiao revealed that he was suffering from a right shoulder injury which hampered his performance, Mayweather won convincingly and it is unlikely that Pacquiao would do better if they ever meet again, according to the same article on Business Insider.
Telegraph also reported that Mayweather and Pacquiao did not discount the potential of a rematch. There are still those who believe that Pacquiao was far from his top form, due to his shoulder injury, which caused him to throw fewer punches than usual.
"I want a rematch if he wants. I wasn't 100 percent ready for last night, because of this shoulder, but I don't want to use that complaining that I lost the fight. I'm just accepting the fact that I lost," Pacquiao said, as quoted by Bleacher Report.
In the meantime, the Mayweather camp is eyeing on Amir Khan as the next opponent for Floyd's final fight. Amir Khan has long been asking for a fight against either Mayweather or Pacquiao to catapult himself to superstardom.
