Actress Winona Ryder is in talks to remake her 1988 hit "Beetlejuice."
The Tim Burton-directed dark comedy is still very popular today and in regular rotation on TV.
"We were talking about it, and it's literally a situation of if something's being written and if it's interesting and good," Ryder, who played Lydia in the 1988 film, told CNN. "I mean, I would obviously do anything for Tim. Anything. And Lydia is actually one of my favorite roles."
Ryder has met with Burton and Beetlejuice himself, Michael Keaton, saying there's a lot of "goodwill" from them to participate in some way; this time, Burton as producer and Keaton rekindling his role.
The Sun said Burton has expressed interest in bringing the movie back, but his last string of remakes have all been less than stellar. Burton has lost the magic touch he once had in the 90s. He's no longer directing hits like "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas." His "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Planet of the Apes" remake, while box office successes, have been largely forgotten by audiences. Burton frequently worked with Ryder and Johnny Depp in the 80s and 90s. Ryder, once an A-list star, has fallen to B-list status and hasn't had many hits since her very public and very embarrassing arrest for shoplifting in 2001. Her last big movie was "Black Swan" in 2009 and she only played a minor character.
Film studios shouldn't give the green light to the film just yet. The Hollywood trend as of late is remaking older films. Some are indeed box offices successes, but audiences have resented the "ruining" of their favorite movies. Among recent remakes are "Total Recall," "Footloose," and "Carrie."
