Floyd Mayweather is getting close to his fight weight three weeks away from his big bout against Manny Pacquiao on May 2.
TMZ reported that Mayweather does a mandatory weigh in every 30 days. He recently tipped the scales at 150.5 pounds, which is 3.5 pounds over the welterweight limit of 147. However, fans should not be worried that the undefeated champ will not make weight on the big day. TMZ also talked to the boxer's chef a while back and she said that Mayweather usually goes on a stricter diet and training regimen as the fight date draws nearer.
Mirror reported that boxers are generally allowed to weigh 10 percent above their division limit in the mandatory 30-day weight check by the WBC, writes Daily Mail. This means that Mayweather is actually in the right range and can easily lose the remaining pounds in the next three weeks.
There is no news yet regarding Manny Pacquiao's present weight but both fighters are currently expected to weigh over 147 at this point in their preparations. Mayweather and Pacquiao will next be weighed on April 25 which is seven days before the big fight at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Both fighters at that time should be within five percent of the welterweight limit.
Based on the same report by Daily Mail, the weight checks are considered as precautions that will lower the risk of boxers suffering brain damage due to fluid loss. The condition usually happens when fighters are too high above their target weight that they attempt to lose weight quickly in the short period leading to the fight.
Mayweather is using a variety of methods to ensure that he is fit and healthy for the biggest fight of his career. Aside from doing the mandatory weigh in on an electronic scale, Mayweather also presented a video on Instagram on April 8 going for a cold sauna in a Cryotherapy Chamber, which is used to help the body recovery after a grueling workout. It can hasten recovery and reduce muscle soreness and inflammation. The device can feature temperatures as cold as -140 to -200 degrees and each session lasts only from one to three minutes.
Floyd may also employ other final techniques in the few days before the final weigh in to get rid of excess water and help him reach his target weight. Boxers usually do more cardio, increase the intensity of their workouts, cut sodium and hit a hot sauna to reach weight goals successfully.
