Google has unveiled its Samsung Chromebook Series.
The "computer for everyone" is 0.8 inches thick, sports an 11-inch x 768 display, (1366x768 resolution), weighs 2.4 pounds, has 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage for two years and has a battery that is aid to last up to 6.5 hours, USA Today says. It has a single USB 3.0 port, a single USB 2.0 port, a combo headphone/mic jack, secure digital memory slot, and an HDMI Port. The computers come preloaded with Gmail and YouTube.
Chromebooks are said to be virus-free machines that start up within a matter of seconds-10 seconds to be exact. And at an unbeatable price of $249, the computer is expected to make a huge splash.
"Many people use the Chromebook today as the perfect additional computer for their home. For families, it's easy to use and share: for kids doing homework on the couch, parents catching up on emails at the kitchen counter and grandparents staying connected on video chat. There's no need to worry about security updates and maintenance is easy; all you need to do is charge the battery. It just works," said Google's Chrome Blog.
Google says the computers automatic updating mechanisms, 3G capabilities and a "defense in depth" security system, which does a self-check every time the device is turned on.
USA Today says Google faces one big problem-fierce competition.
The highly-anticipated Windows 8 software and Surface tablet, Apple's iPad mini and possible new tablets and smartphones from Google all pose a problem for the hype leading up to its release, USA says.
The Chromebook is now available for pre-order online from Amazon, Best Buy, PC World and other retailers.
