Manny Pacquiao may have the answer to stopping Floyd Mayweather.
The two boxing superstars are set to battle it out on May 2 in Las Vegas. CBS Sports reported that the Pacquiao team is planning to enforce effective aggression to hand Mayweather his first professional defeat.
Pacquiao's coach Freddie Roach said, "In the [Chris] Algieri fight, [Manny] followed him too much, and I wasn't really happy about the way he went about that fight."
Roach continued, "The first thing in the gym here, we go back to cutting the ring off and how he's going to fight Mayweather and not fall into traps. Mayweather does set traps. When he's moving along the ropes and you follow him, he will set you up for the right hand. That is something we had to work on. We work on it every day. And Manny knows the answer to that puzzle every time. Every time I set the trap, he steps away and puts himself in a neutral position."
He said, "That's the smartest thing to do against Mayweather at this point."
Looking at Mayweather in his past 47 fights, he lands more punches than his opponents despite throwing a lot less punches. Roach said that he will make Pacquiao unique from all the boxers that Mayweather faced before. He said that he does not want Pacquiao to stay in the pocket too long and to get out before Mayweather hits back. Mayweather will fight back when hit. According to Roach, Pacquiao will take advantage the moment Mayweather rests on the ropes.
International Business Times reported that Roach learned a lot in the fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Mayweather in 2007, where he coached the "Golden Boy". The trainer shared that he learned about how Mayweather fights by watching the tapes and said that these helped much in forming their strategy for the May 2 bout. According to Roach, they already have a "complete gameplan" against Mayweather and is excited about the way that Pacquiao is responding to his suggestions. He said that Pacquiao is working well to employ their strategy and training very hard.
Boxing News 24 reported that Roach also threw shade at Mayweather, saying that he heard that Mayweather got beaten during training for two straight days. He said he believes that Mayweather is beatable and has a history of losing, by losing in the Olympics and not being the best amateur. However, Mayweather has gone a long way since his entry into professional boxing and is also expected to come in prepared for Pacquiao's moves.
