The Ronda Rousey and Laila Ali issue has just gone on a whole new level.
Previously, the daughter of Muhammad Ali was asked by TMZ about her thoughts on a dream match between her and Ronda Rousey. Laila Ali responded that no woman can beat her and that Rousey was much smaller than her, exaggerating that the UFC women's bantamweight champion is just the same size as her daughter.
Rousey responded saying that she is willing to face Ali anytime. The 37-year-old Ali, however, clarified her statements and said that she is already retired from professional boxing and is currently focused on her family and new career, with no intentions of facing Ronda.
Adding fuel to fire, TMZ also reported that UFC president Dana White, is willing to make a match happen if Ali is serious about fighting Rousey, and he believes that the UFC champ will win.
White said, "[Ronda's] actually the best fighter in the world ... Laila Ali would be in big trouble against Ronda Rousey."
He added, "I'm serious if [Laila's] serious. Call me Laila."
ESPN reported that White even categorized Ali to be in the "14-second range", which means that Rousey will most likely beat her in that little timeframe. Rousey set a new record for the fastest title defense match after winning over Cat Zingano at UFC 184 via submission.
Ali has long retired from the sport but was very dominant during her peak years, remaining undefeated with a 24-0 record. She reiterated on ESPN's "SportsCenter" (as reported by Sporting News) that she does not plan to return to the ring.
Laila said, "It was a random question (from a TMZ operative). I wasn't expecting it. I'm a confident person, always have been, so I don't see what the big deal is, what the controversy's all about. I have not said I want to fight her; she has not said she wants to fight me."
She explained, "It's the public that would like to see us fight. I was the best there was at boxing. I'm retired, undefeated, 24-0, 21 knockouts. My last fight was at light heavyweight (160 pounds), and Ronda Rousey is a bantamweight, 135-pound UFC fighter who is currently still fighting. She's (at the) top of her game, which is great. I love seeing women on top. But when asked if someone can beat me, of course I'm always going to say, 'No,' no matter who it is. It was never about her."
Ali then slyly made a jab at the audience, saying, "Never say never!"
