Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr decided to let Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson rest and sit during their game against the Denver Nuggets, which disappointed a lot of fans.
NESN reported that Kerr emailed back the three Warriors fans who were not able to see the Splash Brothers in action on Friday, March 13.
Kerr said in an ESPN report, "There's two really good sides to the story," Kerr said. "Nobody's wrong here. ... I can't argue with them."
He added, "I heard from some fans. I received a few emails, stories about driving in from a long distance off and spending a lot of money on tickets. I have great sympathy for those people. I really do. It's a tricky one. It's something that I think Adam Silver is trying to address through the scheduling shuffling that he's talking about."
Kerr shared that he understood the situation, "It's real important, because our fans deserve to see the best product out there. If somebody spends a lot of money, they deserve to see the best players, the guy that they came to see. On the other hand, as coaches we have to do what's best to prepare our teams for a really long year."
ESPN in the same report mentioned that the Warriors were on a five-game winning streak before losing to the Nuggets 114-103 then proceeded to win against the New York Knicks the following night with a final score of 125-94. Curry and Thompson were back on the court against the Knicks.
CBS Sports reported that Kerr and the trainers of the team observed how Curry and Thompson needed to rest and decided to keep them on the bench after they won against the Detroit Pistons on March 11. Kerr said that they can tell whether a player is already tired. The coach said that the situation can be quickly reversed if the weary player was allowed to rest for two days. Things can also get worse if a player gets overloaded.
Kerr also mentioned about how NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's plans of adjusting the NBA schedule to allow more rest periods for players by setting fewer back-to-back games can be advantageous for the entire league. Silver extended the All-Star break to let NBA players recuperate and also planned to shorten the preseason and to begin the regular season earlier. According to Kerr, until the new changes are implemented, he has to make the necessary adjustments to keep his players healthy.
