The third presidential debate is set for next Monday, but the topics have been set and approved.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) selected Bob Schieffer of CBS News' Face the Nation to moderate the third and last debate of the 2012 presidential election season. Shieffer was also delegated to decide on the topics and questions for the 90-minute debate.
Although the questions won't be released until the Oct. 22 [Correction - Debate is not on Oct. 24] debate, the topics have been confirmed.
The topics are subject to change as the news develops, but currently the topics are:
- America's role in the world
- Our longest war - Afghanistan and Pakistan
- Red Lines - Israel and Iran
- The Changing Middle East and the New Face of Terrorism I
- The Changing Middle East and the New Face of Terrorism II
- The Rise of China and Tomorrow's World
As indicated with the topics and stated by the CPD, the third debate will have the theme of foreign policy, a contrast to the first debate which focused on domestic policy.
The final debate will set in Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, which is considered to be a battleground state for the election.
According to the CPD the format will have six 15-minute time segments, each of which devoted to a topic selected by Schieffer. As moderator, Schieffer will start each segment with a question and then each candidate will have two minutes to respond. After the two minute responses, the moderator will use the remainder of the 15-minute segment to allow a discussion on the topic.
Schieffer also moderated the last presidential debate during the 2008 election season.
