Kellogg's has issued a recall of almost 3 million boxes of its Bite Size Frosted and Unfrosted Mini-Wheat cereal because some packages contain metal pieces.
"[We] have initiated a voluntary recall due to the possible presence of fragments of flexible metal mesh from a faulty manufacturing part," the company said in a statement. "Recalled products include only Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size with the letters KB, AP or FK before or after the Best If Used Before date."
The boxes being recalled range from April 1 and Sept. 21of next year should not be used. The article said the cereal was distributed nationwide.
The LA Times said this is the second Kellogg's recall in just over two years. In 2010, Kellogg's recalled Fruit Loops, Corn Pops, Apple Jacks and Honey Smacks cereals because of a funky smell and flavor attributed to a packaging issue.
"At Kellogg, our number one priority is the quality and safety of our foods," the company said. "We have a comprehensive metal control program that includes magnets and metal detection devices. We are working with our metal detector supplier to understand why the equipment did not detect the mesh fragments."
The company said there have been no reports of any injuries associated with these products.
