After the St. Louis Rams cut Michael Sam from its roster, the defensive end is trying out a new career path -- dancing.
TMZ Sports reported that Sam made waves by becoming the first openly gay football player drafted in the NFL in August 2013. Now, Sam will be competing in Season 20 of "Dancing with the Stars" and the new season is set to commence filming on March 16.
Sam previously shared his disappointment after being cut from the team, adding that one of the reasons for his waiver was his sexual preference. In a Daily Mail report, Sam was removed from the Rams at the end of the training session. According to him, he was SEC Defensive Player of the Year before, so the decision to cut him had nothing to do with lack of talent.
He promised to return to the NFL and participate in the veteran's combine on March 22. NFL experts and potential teams may be confused whether Sam is more serious about football or appearing on TV.
In a Fox Sports report, Sam said about his plan for an NFL return, "Through all the ups and downs, though, I've remained focused on getting back on an NFL roster. It's why I get up early every morning and push myself at the gym, and why I'm looking to participate in the first-ever NFL veterans combine this winter."
Daily Mail reported that Sam is 6-foot-2 and 261 pounds, which means that he is more than fit to go through the regular and tedious dancing rehearsals required before every show appearance.
The 25-year-old Texan will be joining other celebrities to compete for the ultimate prize. Rumer Willis was confirmed to be one of the contestants. Photos of Willis showed her practicing in the studio with Chmerkovskiy. Other possible names that might be confirmed to be on the show include Artem Chigvintsey, comedienne Roseanne Barr, singer Lalah Hathaway, Chris Soules of "The Bachelor", Mark Ballas, Allison Holker, Peta Murgatroyd, Tony Dovolani, Witney Carson, Kym Johnson, Emma Slater and Sharna Burgess.
The full cast of the show for its 20th season will be officially announced on February 24 on "Good Morning America". Sam did not yet state how he intends to juggle his schedule on the show and veteran's combine.
Sam will not be the first NFL player to appear on "Dancing with the Stars". Before, Hines Ward and Emmitt Smith won in their respective seasons, based on a report by Yahoo! Sports. Jason Taylor, Jerry Rice and Warren Sapp also did well by garnering second place.
