When the sadomasochist film "Fifty Shades of Grey" was released on Valentine's Day, the public had mixed reactions towards the sex scenes.
U.S. Olympian, devout Evangelical Christan and self-proclaimed virgin Lolo Jones was one of the viewers who deemed the bed scenes "unholy". According to the athlete, the movie is not supposed to be watched by people because it puts "unholy sex" on a pedestal, based on a report by TMZ Sports.
Jones resorted to Twitter to share her frustrations about the film. She tweeted, "Funny how some people think there's nothing wrong with 50 shades of Grey. God didn't create sex for that purpose." She added, "Watch another movie."
She later on explained that it was not right for the movie to justify sadomasochism as a way to deal with their emotional issues. She wrote, "Some ppl medicate pain by being more and more physical to where if they are ever alone they can't feel any peace."
Jones is quite vocal about her stance on current events. Fansided reported that the track star said in October 2014 that her father was sentenced to prison in South Africa for murder, so she was not going to attack para-athlete Oscar Pistorius for murder charges against his girlfriend.
Jones is rumored to be dating Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who is a new divorcee. Wilson is also a devout Christian and vocal about his views on pop culture and recent events. Wilson, however, found "Fifty Shades of Grey" amusing and actually liked the movie, advising others to go and watch it, based on the same report by TMZ Sports.
Fansided wrote in the same report that perhaps Jones' words were not directed at potential viewers of the movie but as a statement to debate Wilson's opinion about the love scenes which obviously outraged Jones. On the contrary, the track star may simply be stating that she did not like the film. Jones previously made it clear that she will remain a virgin until her wedding day.
Since the movie released, people have been discussing about the appropriateness of exotic sex in a relationship. The novel and movie may have compelled people to reconsider their take on pain, sex and emotional attachment. The movie is deemed by many as quite graphic and was given a mature rating so that only audiences 18 years old and above can watch in theatres. The movie nonetheless generated enough waves to garner over $81 million during its opening weekend, based on a USA Today report.
