A new "Aunt Pearl" colorway is set to be released as Kevin Durant's latest basketball shoe.
Named after the reigning MVP's very close aunt, Nike.com reported that Kevin Durant's Aunt Pearl died of lung cancer in 2001. The KD7, Durant's signature shoe, will release in the new colorway consisting of pearlescent white, gold and pink tones. The shoe will retail at $170 and will be available at Nike.com, Eastbay.com, Foot Locker and other select Nike retail outlets and sneaker boutiques.
Leo Chang is the designer of the new "Aunt Pearl" version, which was inspired by Durant's angel tattoo. The shoe features a three-dimension angel wing strap at the midfoot. There is also a print of Durant's angel tattoo on the back of the tongue and a wing pattern on the two gold Swoosh logos. Durant helped design the new shoe version, using his angel tattoo as inspiration, which was completed by artist Randy Harris. The tattoo can be found on Durant's back and constantly reminds the OKC forward of his close relationship with his late aunt.
Durant said in the same Nike.com report, "I'm so proud that my Aunt Pearl's elegance was captured by this shoe. She always taught me to hold my head high and carry myself with humble confidence. It's fitting that's the exact statement this shoe makes to me."
SneakerBarDetroit presented photos of the KD7 "Aunt Pearl", which gave a few references in the battle against cancer. The flywires are pink and there is a pink Kay Yow logo at the back of the shoe. The sock lining of the shoe is also pink, with the caption printed, "Kevin Durant & Kay Yow Cancer Fund". The back of the wing midfoot strap also had the caption, "In memory of Aunt Pearl, who inspired us all to continue to fight for a cure." The Zoom Air unit at the heel is also pink.
The KD logo on the tongue is gold while the rest of the shoe is white, with hints of silver on the outsole and toe part. The shoelaces and tongue are also white. The shoe appears very sleek and clean and will be good for playing as well as a casual wear.
Slam Online revealed that the Nike KD7 "Aunt Pearl" will officially launch on Friday, February 19. Other places to purchase the shoe include Nike Town in New York and Los Angeles. Some stores may feature a raffle-style promo, with tickets made available since February 16.
