Aaron Hernandez's fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, was given immunity in exchange for her testimony in the former NFL star's murder trial.
TMZ reported that Judge E. Susan Garsh announced an "endorsement for immunity to Shayanna Jenkins."
Previously, Hernandez was charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd, Jenkins' sister's boyfriend. Lloyd was shot on June 17, 2013 in an empty field close to Hernandez's home in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Prosecutors have evidence to put Hernandez at the scene of the crime, but no murder weapon, confession or eyewitness has been revealed yet. Hernandez also pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Jenkins was implicated for allegedly disposing of possible evidence at the request of her fiancé after Odin died. Jenkins was found carrying a black plastic bag from the basement then drove her sister's car for about 30 minutes.
It is not yet known how much protection Jenkins will be receiving for sharing details about the murder. Based on reports, prosecutors claim that Jenkins was found lying to the grand jury 29 times. She also pleaded not guilty to perjury charges. The immunity granted may only be limited to protecting her from perjury charges. Depending on the judge, the immunity may also absolve her of more serious charges.
Sports Illustrated reported that Jenkins will most likely be asked to testify whether she indeed helped Hernandez cover up the murder. She may be immune from being charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, being an accessory to the crime and other felony charges that might cause her years of jail time.
Sports Illustrated also reported that there is a possibility that Jenkins will refuse to testify. Having immunity means that she will not incriminate herself by providing truthful testimony during trial. She will no longer be able to raise the Fifth Amendment to avoid testimony. She can take the stand but refuse to answer questions, in effect, putting her in contempt of court and landing her in jail until she testifies.
So far, Jenkins has been very loyal to Hernandez, sitting and talking to his family. Despite her sister testifying against Hernandez, Jenkins has stuck with the former New England Patriot throughout the ordeal. ESPN reported that she still lives in the couple's mansion in North Attleborough with their two-year-old daughter.
There is no news yet when Jenkins will testify. The trial is expected to continue on February 11 after being delayed for two days due to a snowstorm.
