It seems like Peyton Manning is getting ready for the 2015 NFL season.
Although rumors circulated that the Denver Broncos quarterback is about to retire, he is reported to have scheduled training with fitness expert Mackie Shilstone in New Orleans.
Yahoo! Sports reported that generally, the Broncos are better with the 38-year-old leading them. Despite his age, he is still better compared to many quarterbacks in the league. Backup quarterback Brock Osweiler also has yet to prove himself as a suitable successor of Manning.
Some fans are actually worried about how Manning might perform under the supervision of new Broncos coach Gary Kubiak. However, Kubiak will most likely let Manning work his offensive plays like he always did. Kubiak was actually good and had reasonable expectations from Matt Schaub when he coached in Houston.
On the contrary, Yahoo! Sports also reported that Manning is indeed declining. His arm strength and health are not as good as before. He suffered a quad injury and failed to break 180 yards in the two games prior to the injury. Based on NFL history, only 13 quarterbacks who were at least 39 years old had 200 attempts in a given season. Brett Favre is the only quarterback who was at least 39 years old with over 200 attempts and a rating over 100. It will be very rare for Manning to rate over 100.
In another Yahoo! report, Brett Favre actually advised Manning to consider a few things first before deciding to retire or return.
Favre said, "I think the numbers he's put up the last few years are staggering. Can he do that again? I guess that's a question these teams have to ask if he chooses to play."
Favre added, "Initially he said this is gonna be a quick decision and it hasn't been so quick. I sympathize with him since I've been there. Part of you really wants to redeem yourself, not that you need [to]. That's the thing, you don't need the redemption, [Manning]'s done everything, but there's something, you know, I don't want to go out like that."
According to Favre, the objective is to avoid asking the question, "What if?"
Fox Sports reported that as for the Broncos, they are not sure whether they want to have Manning back for another season. He has an upcoming physical and the team might fail him. The Broncos have to be very comfortable about him leading them another season before deciding to let him return.
