Marvel is currently in the planning stages of its upcoming female-led superhero film "Captain Marvel," and are reportedly eyeing a female director to lead the film, none other than Angelina Jolie, Comic Book reported.

The actress has so far been busy with her directorial pursuits, recently helming the film "Unbroken," a biographical, World War II drama about the life of Louis Zamperini. Amidst compliments and criticisms of Jolie's directorial skills, reports have it that the film piqued Marvel Studios' interest, enough that they were now looking to work with her.

OK! Magazine broke the news in their February issue, reporting that Marvel offered Jolie $20 million to direct "Captain Marvel."

Not only were they impressed with her work on "Unbroken," but the studio also allegedly wanted a woman to direct the film, with an insider source telling the magazine, "Having a female director is a priority for them."

The insider added that Jolie was very interested in the offer, saying, "She never thought she'd be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back."

The Sony fiasco, as the insider called it, referred to the series of emails that were leaked last year when Sony Pictures' former co-chairman Amy Pascal insulted Jolie, calling her a "minimally talented spoiled brat."

Neither Jolie nor Marvel's reps have replied to the news, so fans are still warned to take the news lightly.

Brat or not, however, if the rumors are true, it would certainly be a good opportunity for Jolie, though there would also surely be a lot of pressure and expectations for both her and Marvel Studios to deliver a good film, according to Cinema Blend.

"Captain Marvel" would be the nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the seventh film in their Phase 3. Most of all, it would be the first major female-led, superhero film and will likely set the tone for all future heroine films.

If Jolie doesn't get to take over the director's chair, one name that has popped up for consideration is "Avengers" director Joss Whedon, according to Movie Pilot. He was asked during a recent interview about whether or not he would consider taking up the "Captain Marvel" project if it was offered to him.

"I would never rule anything out because I like working here," he said, but admitted that he had some problems with the heroine. He said, "My only issue with her is that she always felt sort of on top. She was very driven. A winner. I always like to dig into the soil of things to find my heroes, if I can."

"Captain Marvel" is still prepping for its release though, which is scheduled on July 6, 2018, so there are still plenty of chances for Marvel to find the best director for the film.
