As promised, Netflix released the trailer for the upcoming TV series "Daredevil" on Wednesday. Watch it here:
In the trailer, we heard the confession of a blind lawyer named Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, who later turns out to be the superhero Daredevil in Hell's Kitchen.
He says, "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It's way too long since my last confession...I've been pre-occupied of late...with questions of morality, of right and wrong, good and evil." The camera then pans to several scenes projecting drugs, murder, and other crime.
The priest then responds, "Perhaps this will be easier if you tell me what you've done."
To which Matt replied, "I'm not seeking forgiveness for what I've done Father...I'm asking for forgiveness for what I'm about to do." We then see some of the action scenes our superhero is about to undertake. At the end part of the clip, we hear him say, "I'm just trying to make my city a better place."
In the clip, we also see other characters like Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and Scott Glenn as Stick.
So why was the trailer a form of confession? According to IGN's interview with executive producer Steven S. DeKnight, the confession is a reflection of Matt Murdock's Catholicism.
"I think it's vital to the character. Matt Murdock is, I think, one of the most, if not the most, religious characters in the Marvel Universe, with the heroes. His Catholicism is so much part of his being and part of his conflict, I think it would be incredibly disingenuous to attempt to do the show where that's not a big part of it," IGN quoted him as saying.
DeKnight also shared why Cox was chosen for the role. He said that it was Cox's "charm," "charisma" and "niceness" that made him the right choice for the role. He also said that the actor had a "fascinating take" on the character and that he was ready to make adjustments. DeKnight said that Cox also has this ability to display "inner turmoil and pain" which is important for the role.
DeKnight also revealed why Daredevil's suit was black and not red. He said that the black suit just pertains to the start of Matt Murdock becoming "Daredevil."
"We wanted the early days of him figuring out what he was doing and making mistakes and getting the crap beat out of him on a regular basis. His suit, which we call his vigilante outfit, in the beginning - we tried practically everything, design-wise. We experimented with a lot of different head pieces... I can't say where his costume ends up, where it goes, but there is definitely an evolution," he was quoted as saying.
Marvel earlier announced that fans can now watch the series exclusively on Netflix this April 10. The first season of the show will be composed of 13 one-hour episodes. Also in the cast list are Vondie Curtis Hall as Ben Ulrich, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Marianna, Bob Gunton and Leland Owlsey, and Toby Leonard Moore as Wesley.
