With the consensus being President Barack Obama lost the first presidential debate, the eyes are now set on Vice President Joe Biden to secure a rebound for the Democrats.
As Reuters noted, "Vice presidential debates rarely play a role in deciding a White House race, but Romney's decisive win in the first presidential debate has cranked up interest in Thursday's encounter."
The first and only vice presidential debate for the 2012 election season is set for this Thurs., Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. EDT from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Martha Raddatz from ABC News will moderate the event.
Fellow members of the media are already speculating on what the American audience could expect.
Global News Desk: "The 69-year-old Joe Biden, who has a senatorial record of 36 years and has run for the US Presidency twice, subscribes to an ideology that is hugely divergent from Paul Ryan, who is highly inexperienced as opposed to Biden. The Democrat running mate is expected to assail unrelentingly Ryan's vital arguments on issues like taxes, deficit reduction, entitlement reform, etc. These are issues, on which there are immense disagreements between Democrats and Republicans."
Politico: "'Romney and Ryan offer a multitude of opportunities for us to show the contrast between our middle-class agenda and their plan to repeat the mistakes that got us into this mess in the first place,' said one Biden official."
Reuters: "Even if the vice presidential debate is typically less meaningful than the presidential encounters, neither campaign can afford a slip-up before an expected television audience in the tens of millions."
The Washington Times: "Congressman Paul "The Kid" Ryan is light on his feet and knows how to dance around an answer if he has to. But don't count out scrappy Vice-president Joe "The Gaffer" Biden, who can do rope-a-dope, better than anyone around. Look how he handled Sarah Palin four years ago."
PolicyMic: "Ryan is likely to attack the president directly rather than focusing his criticism on Biden. During rallies, Ryan has derided Obama's leadership style, foreign policy record, and economic decisions."
New York Times: "Thursday's debate between Mr. Biden and Mr. Ryan may not draw quite the same audience, but both sides view it as critical and are preparing for a contentious clash."
Thursday's 90-minute debate, according to the Commission on Political Debates (CPD), will have the theme of domestic and foreign policy.
The CPD added that the debate will have nine segments with a 10-minute time limit, each. As moderator, Raddatz will give an opening question and Biden and Ryan will each have two minutes to respond. Afterwards, Raddatz will give the candidates time to elaborate on the topic
