Nintendo's next-gen Wii U will be out in a little over a month, but competitors Microsoft and Sony have yet to reveal any details about their next-gen offerings. The reason for that may be because both companies seem to expect the current Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to viable and relevant for a while longer.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Halo 4 franchise development director Frank O'Connor revealed that he expects the Xbox 360 to stick around for a while longer.

When asked about the release of Halo 4 at what looks like the end of the Xbox 360's life cycle, O'Connor responded, "But I would actually strongly contest the fact that the Xbox 360 is at the end of its life cycle, this has already been one of the longest generations and there's a really good reason for it, which is that current consoles are incredibly flexible and still really powerful."

"I think that looking forward into the future I can see years from now, even after next-gen platforms are out, that you'll have lower priced versions of the existing consoles happily living side by side and serving really valuable functions," he added.

PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller told Gamespot that he expects to continue to support the PlayStation 4 until around 2015.

"We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we're going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot," said Koller.

So the reason why we haven't received any solid information on the Xbox 720 and PlayStation may have a lot to do that both Sony and Microsoft see their current-gen systems as having plenty of life left in them. This may be true, from a developer's point of view, but consumers like shiny, new toys, and perhaps Microsoft and Sony should recognize that as well.
