James Franco is not above teasing and shocking fans when he posted a photo of himself and Zachary Quinto kissing passionately and holding hands, TMZ reported.
While fans are probably experiencing a mix of emotions over the picture, it was actually all for the Sundance premiere of Franco and Quinto's upcoming film "I Am Michael."
Franco posted the picture of himself and Quinto kissing on his Instagram account on Thursday.
"#iammichael, directed by the great @tojustinkelly, starring me and the legendary, @zacharyquinto, PREMIERES AT SUNDANCE," he wrote.
More pictures of the two have appeared online, including one with "Teen Wolf" actor Charlie Carver, featuring the famous threesome scene. Other pictures showe Franco in the bathtub and him and Quinto sharing a moment in the woods.
The film is directed and written by Justin Kelly and is based on the article "My Ex-Gay Friend" written by Benoit Denizet-Lewis for the New York Times Magazine, according to Out. It stars Franco as Michael Glatze, a former gay magazine editor who rejected his homosexuality and became a Christian pastor and anti-gay activist.
Franco is joined by Quinto and Carver, who play his lovers Bennett and Tyler, respectively, according to USA Today.
Also appearing are Emma Roberts as Rebekah Fuller, the Christian woman Michael fell in love with after his conversion; Daryl Hannah as Deborah, who runs the Buddhist retreat in Colorado where Michael runs to; Avan Jogia as Nico, a gay Buddhist Michael falls in love with; and more.
The threeway sex scene between the actors actually first made headlines back in November, according to E! News.
A source talked about the "very hot" scenes, sharing: "They first meet in a club. The music is pumping. It's the nineties. When Charlie's character questions Franco about having a boyfriend, Franco says, 'He'd like you too.'"
All that led to the steamy sex scene many are now able to recognize through the newly released photos. The source shared that three were naked, intertwined and kissing for the film. Viewers will actually get to see their backsides, the source added.
Sex scenes aside, the source said that the events are "disastrous and heartbreaking," especially after the three broke off their romance, and Michael ends up renouncing his homosexuality.
Quinto also spoke about his character in the film, and hinted that it wasn't just about the sex scenes or being gay, according to News.
"I like what the character that I play represents in the film, which is integrity and groundedness and authenticity and acceptance of who he is," the actor said.
"I Am Michael" will be shown in Park City, Utah in Jan. 29.
