Long before reality television took over U.S. households, the game-show era reigned supreme. Bob Barker's jovial voice welcomed viewers to "come on down" on The Price is Right. Regis Philbin started a nationwide phenomenon with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Even Jeopardy has shown longevity, thanks to host Alex Trebek and his many, many imitators.
With news of LeBron James-owned James' SpringHill Productions partnership with NBC, could Akron's native son be behind prime-time's next hit?
According to Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon, James is putting together a contest that will award "life-changing amounts of money." The network declined to comment, and the show doesn't have a formal title or airing date, but it has reportedly been in development for months. One thing lead producer Andrew Glassman - the mind behind Average Joe - did publicize is his and James' desire to make the project about everyday people.
Per James' request, the show is starting its couples' search in Akron and Cleveland areas. "I thought starting here with the people I love here, means a lot to them," James said in speaking with Vardon. "Me being a part of the game show is all part of my team doing things that are outside the box, but also that's fun and families and people of any age can gravitate to."
Anyone associated with SpringHill, James, or the LeBron James Family Foundation are not eligible as to avoid any conflicts of interest. Those looking to apply, or interested in nominating contestants, can do so at dreamchancetv.com.
Though James and his business partner Maverick Carter still run the company's day-to-day operations, it's unlikely the two-time NBA champion takes any time off mid-season. Especially with the Cavaliers fighting for a playoff spot.
