Lionsgate Films, in cooperation with Saban, is set to premiere its "Power Rangers" reboot film sometime in 2016, and Jason David Frank confirmed that filming is already set to start this year, Screen Rant reported.
The upcoming "Power Rangers" reboot franchise was initially announced in August and ever since then, it's been experiencing more than a few delays, such as producer Roberto Orci's decision to leave the project. Because of that, some are wondering if the movie will make it in time for its planned release on July 2016, but now, news has appeared that everything was proceeding as scheduled.
The news comes from Frank, who is known for playing Green Ranger Tommy Oliver in several "Power Rangers" TV series, including the early 1990s "Might Morphin Power Rangers" show.
During an interview with Comic Book, Frank said, "We're definitely not in a holding pattern. The movie is definitely set for this year. Everything is in place."
The team from Cinema Blend also reached out to Lionsgate about Frank's statement, and received confirmation that the release date is still the same.
When asked by Comic Book, Frank wasn't able to share a lot of details about the project though, adding, "They won't give me specific details because it's all like hush-hush. Even me, I try."
Frank is confident, however, that he'll be a part of it in one way or another.
"I email Saban and ask them kind of what you're asking me, but they do feel that I'm going to be part of it, because they feel there's no movie, at least, without me," he said.
Confidence aside, Frank has been involved with Saban and the "Power Rangers" brand for a long time as a performer and promoter. It wouldn't be surprising if he plays a part in the film in one way or another.
Other than Frank, there really hasn't been any information about a director for the film or casting, but if Lionsgate is set on its release date, they'll probably need to step up preparations soon.
So far, the first ones confirmed to be working on the project are writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stent from "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class," according to Movie Web.
As for the storyline, reports have it that the film reboot will focus on a group of high school students who end up becoming the Power Rangers. They have to learn to control their powers in order to stop the extraterrestrial forces threatening to destroy Earth.
The "Power Rangers" reboot film will come out on July 22, 2016.
