South Korean singer-rapper Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is taking on a whole new twist in three new viral videos this week. The international megahit, which as of Tuesday has over 348 million hits on YouTube, got three wholly different stylistic covers.
The first video, called ‘Music Videos Without Music: Gangnam Style by Psy,’ has garnered over 5 million views since being posted on September 27. The video takes a unique take on the iconic and entertaining video by removing all music, using an a Capella version and transplanting sound effects throughout the song.
Video number two, an acoustic cover by UC Berkeley Korean rock band RaOn. The group’s mellow version is a change for the poppy song, transforming a dance hit into a truly soothing song. RaOn’s version is definitely not how you’ve heard Gangnam Style before.
‘Gangnam Style- Pentatonix,’ from Sing Off winners Pentatonix, offers perhaps one of the catchiest a Capella versions yet. The fun twist features five members beat boxing, singing along to the Korean lyrics, all the while dancing Psy’s iconic horse dance.
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” currently holds the No. 2 spot on iTunes Top 100 Songs and the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Top 100 Music Videos. The international sensation maintains its No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and its No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart. Psy is also the first Korean artists to top a UK chart.
