The much-awaited movie "Fifty Shades of Grey" has been given an R rating due to "unusual behavior" and "graphic nudity."
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPPA) has given the erotic romance movie, which is set to be released on Valentine's Day, an R rating citing "strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language."
The rating and reasons given were quite expected considering the plot and theme of the said movie. The "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie is based on the book series written by E.L. James. The movie centers on college student Anastasia Steele and handsome young businessman Christian Grey who met when she interviewed him for a school paper article. The two then find themselves engaged in sex and in a non-disclosure and dominance and submission agreement. According to the movie's official website, the book is considered as "one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever." The trilogy was even translated into more than 50 languages worldwide.
Cinema Blend says that the R rating is quite good news as it has been earlier speculated that the movie might get an NC-17 rating. NC-17 movies sometimes end up not being shown on theaters.
One of the movie's producers, Dana Brunetti, earlier said that they are already expecting an R rating for the film and that he personally wants an NC-17 version of the film to be released too.
Here's what he exactly said: "It'll be R, obviously it has to be R. This is just my opinion and this doesn't mean this is going to happen, but I always thought it would be really cool if we released the R version and then we had an NC-17 version that we released a few weeks later. So everybody could go and enjoy the R version, and then if they really wanted to see it again and get a little bit more gritty with it then have that NC-17 version out there as well. It'd be great for the studio too because they'd get a double dip on the box office... What we're kind of hearing from the fans is they want it dirty, they want it as close as possible. We want to keep it elevated but also give the fans what they want."
The role of Christian Grey is played by Jamie Dornan while Dakota Johnson portrays the role of Anastasia. Joining them are Luke Grimes as Elliot, Victor Rasuk as José, Eloise Mumford as Kate, Marcia Gay Harden as Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey, Rita Ora as Mia, Max Martini as Taylor, Callum Keith Rennie as Ray, Jennifer Ehle as Carla, and Dylan Neal as Bob. The movie is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Brunetti, Michael De Luca, and E.L. James. The screenplay is by Kelly Marcel.
