As talks continue to circulate that Floyd Mayweather continues to avoid a mega-bout against Manny Pacquiao much to their fans dismay, Kell Brook might turn out to be the American boxer's next opponent in 2015.
Boxing News 24 reported that Amir Khan, after winning in December 2014, was hoping that he would land a fight against Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs). Mayweather, however, broke the news that he wanted to fight Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, leaving Khan without a potential opponent. Amir Khan also showed no interest in fighting welterweight champion Brook (33-0, 22 KOs). With negotiations between Mayweather and Pacquiao remaining blurry, Mayweather might end up getting in the ring with Brook instead in September 2014.
Boxing News 24 also reported that Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, Brook's promoter, shared that he already discussed matters with Al Haymon, Mayweather's adviser, about a potential fight between the two in September. Hearn stated that he feels that it might be too soon for his fighter to face Mayweather, considering that Brooks is not yet popular in the United States. However, by September 2015, the time might be right for the two undefeated fighters to meet in the ring.
Hearn told IFL TV, "I spoke to Al Haymon about Kell for Mayweather. He's [Brook] undefeated, he's a world champion. I just hink it's too early for him [Brook] in terms of profile. He's not that well known enough in America. We're talking more about that fight taking place in September between Brook and Mayweather. That's more realistic."
According to Hearn, Khan has an offer available that might be more lucrative compared to a fight against Mayweather.
He said in a Sports World News report, "Floyd's doing 800 or 900 thousand buys per pay-per-view event. That's the standard number. Khan [v Mayweather] only does 800,000 buys. If Khan was creating PPV numbers of say 2 million, they would take the fight with him straight away. And Mayweather could lose that fight. They're very clever in who they fight and I just can't see them going for Amir next."
He added, "I just feel that if Amir doesn't fight Floyd Mayweather he has to fight Kell Brook. What were his numbers against Alexander - 700 or 800 thousand dollars? Obviously there was a little bit of UK money. Let's call it one and a half million US dollars. He'd make minimum five and probably more like six or seven million US dollars (£4.5m) to fight Kell Brook."
