The New York Jets are tired of losing after four bad seasons, and have let go of coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik.

Ryan and Idzik were removed on Monday, December 29, after the Jets finished one of its worst seasons in franchise history, based on a Yahoo Sports report.

Jets owner Woody Johnson said at a news conference after he fired the two, ''We're in the win business, and we're not winning. So, I thought this was something I had to do.''

He added in an ESPN report, "It became pretty apparent during the season the team wasn't getting better and, as (Bill) Parcells said, you are what your record says you are. It was kind of obvious we had to make the change. It was obvious to me, anyway."

He continued, "It was a long run. I think (Ryan) had a tremendous impact. Because I think he made the team relevant in some respects," Johnson added. "He did some very good coaching and I knew that every Friday when I talked to him I felt very confident."

Johnson talked about a possible rift between Ryan and Idzik, "I'm not sure if there was a disconnect, but I can tell you the ideal is to have a connect, because you have to be on the same page as your coach,"

"This is very, very critical right now," the Jets owner continued to explain. "We've got to make some good decisions. We have to structure it properly. We have to know exactly what we're looking for in a head coach and how he defines exactly what he's looking for. Same with the GM."

Johnson said about Rex's reaction, "Rex was fully prepared. He was fine with it."

Ryan reportedly met with the players for the last time, showing them a video of game highlights. Afterwards, he thanked them.

Johnson coached the Jets to the AFC title game twice during his first two seasons with the team, beginning in 2009. His contract was extended, but he never took the team to the playoffs again. One of the things that plagued his coaching was inconsistent quarterback plays, despite New York drafting Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez. Ryan exits the Jets with a 46-50 record.

ESPN also added that Idzik made a brief statement. He thanked Johnson "for the opportunity to work with so many fine individuals in the Jets organization and I wish them well going forward."

Johnson said, "That was a tough decision. Only two years, but I had to make it.''
