The second season of Shonda Rhimes’ political drama ‘Scandal,’ which premieres on September 27, is themed after the line, "Dirty little secrets always come out." The show experienced an excited debut season, which was filled with intrigue, secrets and scandals, and fans can expect much more during season two.
The burning question on every fan’s mind is who is Quinn Perkins. Show creator Rhimes told TV Guide that she went on a roller coaster trying to figure out Quinn’s place in the drama. “Sometimes I knew and sometimes I didn’t,” Rhimes said. “It changed over time; it evolved. The writers and I really worked hard to find something that we felt was compelling.” Luckily, fans will find out who she is early on in the premiere episode, although why she’s there will be “this season’s big mystery,” said TV Guide.
Quinn’s identity reveal will cause a split at Pope & Associates, TV Guide revealed. Rhimes said, “Olivia Pope (Kerry Walsh) tells everyone what to do and everyone at Pope & Associates does it. I think that’s no longer true now. There’s a hole left by Stephen (Henry Ian Cusick), [who was] a translator for Olivia to everybody else, and while there are some people who have blind loyalty, some people are not going to take it so well.”
The turmoil back in the office will not be the only thing Olivia has on her mind. After giving up her White House credentials to stay away from President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) last season, Olivia will find it hard to stay away. “I think it’s a very fraught relationship,” Rhimes told TV Guide. “They love each other, but they can’t be together! I feel like that couple, they clearly have this relationship that is very permanent, that’s not going to go anywhere, and yet the obstacles that keep them apart are huge and fairly insurmountable. Mellie is pregnant and there’s a lot going on.”
Rhimes added that although many see First Lady Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) as a villain, she has cause to be the way she is. The creator said, “I have a lot of compassion for Mellie, because I feel like she’s in a terrible position and she might seem like a villain, but when you look at the story from her side…you fully get how she feels.”
As of right now the show is scheduled to run 13 episodes but a full 22 episode run is not out of the equation.
The second season of ‘Scandal’ will also feature a multitude of guest stars. Actress Ann Cusack will be making a guest spot on episode 3 of the second season as a national security agency chief, HuffPost TV reported. The actress confirmed the guest role on Twitter, saying, “Working on the next episode of ABC’s SCANDAL. Really looking forward to it…. I don’t play a Mom, which is unusual for me.”
Actress Young shared that Norm Lewis was doing an arc “like Kerry’s character’s ex-boyfriend kind of thing” and that Patrick Fischler, Lorraine Toussaint and Gregg Henry would also be doing guest spots. According to HuffPost TV, Rhimes is also bring ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ alum Steve Bailey, who played Joe the bartender, in for the second season.TV Guide also reported that 'Desperate Housewives' alum Brenda Strong will be making a guest appearance as Joan Reston, a governor's wife.
‘Scandal’ season two premieres on September 27 at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
