It is about time that the two boxing superstars face each other in a ring, with Floyd Mayweather getting the lion's share of the fight purse.
In a report by Boxing News 24, Pacquiao and Mayweather's camps are trying to iron out a deal that would make a dream fight happen between the two. Fans have been clamoring for what could possibly become the biggest fight in boxing history. For the past five years, Mayweather has been coming up with demands and excuses not to face the eight-division champion. Allegedly, his latest condition was that Pacquiao agree to a 70-30 split of the money.
In the same report by Boxing News 24, there are a number of good reasons why he should agree to fight Mayweather, despite getting only one-half of what the American would rake in.
First, Pacquiao will be back in a big fight with a big opponent, unlike his former foes that remained unknown to many. His fighting style can be highlighted once again, improving his pay-per-view ratings around the world, regardless of whether he wins or loses against Mayweather.
Second, Pacquiao is estimated to earn at least $70 million in fighting Mayweather, which is still significantly bigger compared to his usual $20 million paycheck in lackluster fights. If Pacquiao wins, he gets the chance to fight Mayweather again in a re-match and demand a bigger share. The first fight against Floyd can be a means to improve his standing on the bargaining table.
In another report by Boxing News 24, it even came to a point where Pacquiao challenged Mayweather to a charity fight, just to show that he was more interested in facing the American than raking in millions of dollars. Mayweather, on the other hand, failed to respond.
It has become more difficult than ever to lure Mayweather out to fight the Filipino. Pacquiao has been compromising to the undefeated fighter's demands in the past few years to possibly make a mega fight happen but Floyd always manages to come up with a new excuse. Boxing News 24 reported that even if Pacquiao succumbs to the most unreasonable conditions, it may be unlikely that the two will ever get in the ring because Floyd refuses to.
There have been bigger demands from Floyd in the past and a 70-30 split is considered as one of the more reasonable conditions on the part of the American. Pacquiao should accept the offer. Mayweather also needs to be sincere in his willingness to actually fight the Filipino, based on a report by The Washington Post.
