The Janis Joplin film project is finally ready to head to production, with only half a decade being stuck in development. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Award-winning actress Amy Adams is set to play the role of the legendary rock star, despite the fact that she was rumored to have quit from playing the role back in 2012.
Other negotiations for the film are still taking place, with Jean-Marc Vallee negotiated to direct, and Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack tapped to do the rewrites as necessary.
The website notes that the biopic, which has been in development for quite a while, has seen a lot of setbacks, including picking the director. It has seen several 'comes and goes' over the years with names like Lee Daniels, Fernando Meirelles, and Catherine Hardwicke attached to the project.
Adams was set to do the biopic in 2010, but with the production delays, other names got attached to the film over the years, including Tony Winner Nina Arianda and actress Renee Zellweger at some point.
Finally, it seems that they finally settled on Adams to do the project. According to People Magazine, Adams is a big fan of the singer, who died in 1970 at the age of 27. Her affection for the rock legend was apparent in an interview she did with Vogue in the December issue, when she said she'd want to have coffee with Joplin if given the chance. However, it probably won't be for coffee, though.
In the interview with the magazine, Adams admitted that the biopic's delay has "just been a process of getting the script together and finding time in schedules."
Adams is set to appear in other projects as well including the sci-fi film "Story of Your Life" which is based on a short story by Ted Chiang. She also appeared as the baker's wife in "Into the Woods" back in 2012.
If the timeline will go on as planned, the Janis Joplin biopic, which will be called "Get It While You Can" will begin filming in mid-2015. As much as superhero films were the norm in Hollywood in the early 2010s, the next few years, according to the website Consequence Of Sound, will be shaping up for more music biopics, including Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams, and Paul Dano as Brian Wilson. According to the site, films about N.W.A and Guns N' Roses are also in development.
Do you think Amy Adams can pull off the role of an iconic rock star?
