Season three of the Emmy-nominated comedy left fans with the juicy knowledge of Gloria’s (Sofia Vergara) pregnancy with much-older husband Jay (Ed O’Neill). The upcoming season, which premieres on September 26, will feature Gloria breaking the news to all her family members, including son Manny (Rico Rodriguez).
Executive Producers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd thankfully shared some great spoilers about season four’s premiere episode.
On Gloria, Jay and Manny:
Levitan and Lloyd told TV Line that the Pritchett-Delgado house will have a lot of adjusting to do with the new baby on the way. Gloria announced her pregnancy to audiences in season three’s finale and will spend the premiere episode telling everyone in the family.
Jay, her much-older husband and father to Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), will be dealing with some anxiety, Lloyd said. The producers add that the baby announcement will get a big reaction from all family members, not just Jay.
According to TV Line, Lloyd said, “Gloria, for example, is gaining weight but not wanting to change any of her outfits, which is funny. Jay is caught up dealing with some anxiety about being a dad again, when thought he was done with that 30 years ago. But also, Mitch and Cam worked really hard to try and get a baby last year, and now these other people — who weren’t really trying — did, and Claire, whose family is getting smaller because Haley’s gone off to college, is a little bit jealous of Gloria getting to be a mom again.”
The recently-released promo for the upcoming season also shows Gloria’s son Manny and Jay’s grandson Luke (Nolan Gould) a bit overwhelmed by the news.
The two producers also spilled on Gloria’s impending due date. “No, we will see the baby probably about halfway through the season. We indicated she was pregnant last year, which was the end of May, and she was already a month or two along… So, you can do the math,” Lloyd said.
On Claire, Phil, Haley, Alex and Luke:
With Haley (Sarah Hyland) away at college, the Dunphy’s will have to adjust to a smaller family. Mom Claire will have some difficulties getting use to having only two kids at home and Gloria’s new baby is not helping. Haley’s move to college won’t mean her disappearance from the show, however.
Levitan and Lloyd assured fans that the show will keep her involved in the upcoming season. Lloyd told TV Line, “She heads off to college, but it’s not that far away. She stays in touch, and she visits home; it’s kind of a typical first-year-in-college experience, in that she feels a little bit of loneliness and adjustment. She wants her family, but doesn’t want her family. So, it’s a nice change in her life that’s going on, but she’s far from removed from our family.”
As for Luke and Phil (Ty Burrell)? There’s no news on what kind of trouble the father-son duo will get themselves into.
On Mitch, Cam and Lily:
Everyone’s favorite kooky couple and their adorable tyke were left disappointed last season after they lost their chance to adopt a new baby and will have to deal with the news of Gloria’s pregnancy. But not everything will be sour for the two-some. Producers said the Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) will be returning to work as an Elementary school teacher this fall.
New Cast Members:
TV Line also reported that the show was searching for two new characters, “Pam is a fortyish, opinionated, plus-sized lesbian — in other words, a younger Rosie O’Donnell — and teenage Jorie is a new friend of Haley’s who, from the back, is a dead ringer for her mother.”
‘Modern Family’ season 4 premieres September 26 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
