The first "Warcraft" video game was released by Blizzard Entertainment on PC and Macintosh in November 1994.
Exactly 20 years later, it is now one of the most durable and successful multi-platform video games ever, already piling a total of 13 title releases, the latest being "Heartstone: Heroes of Warcraft" released on March 11 this year.
The evolution of the video game is expected to continue especially with the formal announcement about the release date and the cast of characters of the "Warcraft" movie at BlizzCon 2014 held on November 7 to 8 in Anaheim, California, reports IGN.
The battle between the Alliance featuring the humans, and the Horde, featuring the orcs will finally come to the big screen on March 11, 2016, cites Yahoo! News from an AP report.
Just like in the game, neither the humans nor the orcs will serve as purely good or purely evil in the movie as there will be heroes in both sides.
"As in the game, where you can choose (which) side to be on, I thought it was really important that we make a film which allowed (fans) to be on either side of the conflict and follow heroes on both sides," discloses "Warcraft" film director Duncan Jones before a huge crowd on November 7 at BlizzCon 2014.
As a long-time player of the video game, Jones got excited upon hearing that Sam Raimi was working on a "Warcraft" movie. He said that the challenge was more on how to pick a great story from the video game, notes IGN.
"It's got so many stories. 'World of Warcraft' has been going for 10 years, 'Warcraft' itself has been going for 20 years. Our challenge was to drill down and find a story that would work as a single film," Jones was quoted by Yahoo! News as saying.
Cast and Trailer
The director said that the original movie script had the orcs as the villains in the movie. But considering the huge fan base of the game, a number of whom are also sympathetic to the Horde and the orcs, Jones was able to convince Chris Metzen, Senior VP at Blizzard, for a 50/50 share of the limelight between the Alliance and the Horde, and between Lothar and Durotan, reports IGN.
Yahoo! News said that the human-led Alliance will have Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar, Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, Ben Foster as mysterious mentor (mage) Medivh, and Ben Schnetzer as young mage Khadgar.
The Horde will be headlined by Toby Kebbel, who shall play Frostwolf Clan leader Durotan, Clancy Brown as the war chief Black Hand, and Daniel Wu as the orc ruler Gul'Dan, adds the report.
Garona, an orc who is both sympathetic to the cause of the humans and the orcs, will be played by Paula Patton.
Blizzard has not released an official trailer of the movie yet but they did show an 'unfinished teaser' at the BlizzCon, that according to fans, have yet to be completed.
