Boxing fans may be expecting a boring fight featuring Floyd Mayweather and Jermain Taylor soon, but in a report by Boxing Tribune, rumors are circulating that the undefeated champ might be facing the IBF middleweight titleholder Taylor in an attempt to win his sixth divisional world title.
In the same report, a bout between the two will most likely happen, considering that Taylor's adviser is Al Haymon, Mayweather's mentor. If Mayweather wins the fight, he might continue to excite fans with the possibility of facing Gennady Golovkin or Miguel Cotto but will most likely return to his natural weight class for the sixth and final match in his contract with Showtime.
At present, Boxing Tribune wrote that the Mayweather-Taylor match is a mere speculation. Before, Mayweather has also been linked to a number of potential opponents such as Paulie Malignaggi, Nate Campbell and Saul Alvarez when he was still a teenager. However, a Mayweather-Taylor bout is still likely to draw fans everywhere as he moves up to middleweight. Boxing experts, however, believe that the fans deserve a more exciting matchup.
In a blog by Boxing Buzz, the winner of the December 13, 2014 match between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander will most likely get the privilege of challenging Mayweather next. However, neither Kahn nor Alexander offers the level of excitement that fans deserve. Between Khan and Alexander, Boxing Buzz wrote that Khan would be preferred more by fans. Mayweather's team was particularly aiming to get bigger fights after the two lackluster matches against Marcos Maidana this year.
Previously, Taylor returned from a brief hiatus to win the IBF middleweight belt from Sam Soliman of Australia. During their fight, Soliman was 40 years old and injured his leg, being forced to continue on just one leg. Taylor was the clear winner but still failed to give the fans what they were looking for.
2015 looks to be a boring year for Mayweather. A possible fifth bout against Taylor and a final fight against the victor of the Khan-Alexander fight would still be "sucky", even among die-hard Mayweather fans, Boxing Buzz wrote. Some actually speculate that Mayweather is looking for clear wins to maintain his undefeated status until he retires in September 2015, as he previously announced.
In a report by TheSweetScience.com, there is a greater chance that Floyd would face Jermain Taylor than Filipino Manny Pacquiao.
