Mindy Kaling, the producer, creator, and lead actress of the romantic comedy TV series "The Mindy Project," has defended the October 7 episode of the show wherein viewers saw Mindy and her boyfriend Danny Castellano attempted to engage in anal sex.
Huffington Post called the episode as the "first ever anal sex scene on broadcast television." The episode was titled "I Slipped." Danny Castellano was showed in the episode attempting to have anal sex with Mindy. Mindy, on the other hand, was surprised. Danny said he just "slipped." The entire episode centered on that issue -- if Danny really slipped or did it on purpose, jezebel.com reported. The episode raised some eyebrows on some of the show's fans.
The series which is now on its third season started with Mindy and Danny, portrayed by American actor Chris Messina, finally becoming a couple. Its season premiere was aired mid-September. "The Mindy Project" is being aired by Fox every Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.
A separate report by Huffington Post said that it had an interview with Mindy on the set of "The Mindy Project" in Los Angeles. The 35-year old actress and comedian was quoted in the report saying that "she wants to offer things that no one is seeing anywhere else on television."
It was also revealed in the report that Mindy said that when the show's writers are usually debating on a particular issue to be tackled in the series, it is most likely that it should be pursued. She said that during their discussion, they concluded that the particular scene, even if it is "taboo," is "relatable."
"We wanted to acknowledge that everybody deals with this but nobody wants to talk about it," she told the Huffington Post.
The report also quoted Mindy speaking at the New Yorker Festival on October 11. When she was asked by a fan about the reactions it got due to the episode, she defended the episode and admitted that she was sad about the people's negative reactions.
"I think that, we have to, in knowing what their relationship is and knowing that the way it was portrayed, it wasn't something that made her feel unsafe or degraded ... you can love someone and be in a relationship with them when you're both consenting adults, and people can try things and you can be like ... 'I busted you on that'," she was quoted saying.
She also claimed that is "was not an issue of sexual unsafety." She said it "bummed her out a little bit."
She said that "there was no sexual peril" in that particular episode. The episode also did not show her feeling "unsafe" or "objectified" as she was "just startled."
In another report published by Us Magazine, Mindy described Danny as "a wonderful character, a wish-fulfillment character" who loves Mindy. She said that two are "very understanding" with each other.
"He tried something because he was trying to see what he could get away with, but I don't think that Mindy's reaction to it was 'I feel violated'; it was 'Hey man, run that by me!' It wasn't something that made her feel unsafe or degraded," Us magazine quoted her saying.
