Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) finally managed to move on from her old boyfriend Damon (Ian Somerhalder) when she was hypnotized to forget about him last episode, but just because Elena is okay, does not mean the rest of the supernatural gang are feeling better as well.
Stefan (Paul Wesley) for instance, tried to start over, but the visit from Enzo and Caroline (Michael Malarkey and Candice Accola) shook him up enough to return to Mystic Falls (or as near the borders as they could possibly be), seeking revenge for his now dead girlfriend - by killing her murderer, of course.
The other cast members had their moments, too. As the Wall Street Journal notes, Tyler (Michael Trevino) seems to be getting seriously smitten with the new witch in town, Liv, (Penelope Parker) and Matt (Zach Roerig) is taking his job as a ranger seriously. Of course, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is mourning Bonnie (Kat Graham) with booze and girls, but what else is new, he's back to being the emo kid that he was in Season 1.
While everything is awkward in Mystic Falls, Bonnie and Damon are stuck in their realm looking like as cute a couple as they could be - if only they weren't bickering every five minutes (which a new character, Kai, has observed).
Despite Elena's new-found party girl persona however, it's not all sunshine in Mystic Falls, and in some cases, it's really just heartbreaking.
For instance, Caroline finally admitted to herself, and to Elena that she has feelings for her best friend's ex boyfriend (Stefan).
Then, Stefan has turned into a vampire hunter in his warpath for Enzo, which left the latter half dead and in the hands of a member of the founding families who may burn him in the sun. Is it the end of Damon's old best friend?
Back to the other side, the new character, Kai, (Chris Wood) tries to kill Damon, which, it turns out, was a front to help in his bigger goal - get Bonnie to do magic again, because her magic is the key for the three of them to get out of that place.
Whatever he's doing and whatever his role in the season is yet to be seen, but as of episode 3, he's still just a random person who is an addition to the meager population of Mystic Falls circa 1994.
But another drama is happening on "The Vampire Diaries," and this one is not in the series, but rather, on set. A source for Hollywood Life said that Ian's new girlfriend, Nikki Reed, is banned from the set. The source said, "Ian and Nikki's relationship is causing a lot of drama, to the point where the producers have asked Ian not to bring Nikki to set when Nina is there because they are very worried about losing her. They worry that the show would fall apart without her."
