The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory on Tuesday downgrading Hurricane Michael into a tropical storm and updating on the effects of Tropical Storm Leslie. The Miami-based center was also monitoring a low pressure system in the Atlantic it announced.
Tropical Storm Leslie
Tropical Storm Leslie unleashed hurricane-force winds as it moved over Newfoundland on Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for Newfoundland from Stones Cove to Charlottetown and a tropical storm warning for Newfoundland from Indian Harbour to Triton.
Moving at nearly 40 mph, Leslie was making its way towards the north-northeast and was expected to continue on this path through Wednesday, the NHC said. Leslie maintained maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, the center stated, and was not expected to strengthen in the next day or so. The Tuesday morning advisory also announced that Leslie was anticipated to become an extratropical or frontal cyclone later in the day.
The NHC warned that tropical storm force winds would continue over eastern Newfoundland throughout the afternoon and that swells generated by the storm would continue to affect Atlantic Canada on Tuesday. Leslie is predicted to produce rainfall between 2 to 4 inches across Newfoundland and Eastern Nova Scotia.
Tropical Storm Michael
Hurricane Michael was downgraded to tropical storm status Tuesday morning and was weakening fast, the NHC said. Moving at 18 mph, Michael is expected to turn towards the north-northeast or northeast with an increase in forward speed within the next day or so. The center said Michael had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was anticipated to lose tropical characteristics in the next 24 hours.
Low Pressure System in Atlantic
In the mid-Atlantic, a low pressure system is being monitored by the center. The system, which developed off the coast of Africa, has a 90 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. The NHC said showers and thunderstorms associated with the system were a little more organized on Tuesday as it moved west-northwestward at 15 mph. Advisories on the system would likely be released later on Tuesday, the center said.
