What's up with the secretive "Terminator 5"? According to Jai Courtney, who plays Sarah Connor's love interest, the upcoming film is not exactly a reboot.
Speaking to The Huffington Post Wednesday, the actor first clarified that he can't say much about the project as he had "signed a non-disclosure agreement when he accepted the role, as most big franchise films require these days."
However, that didn't prevent him from sharing a "general picture" of the movie plot.
"What I can say is that we start in a place we're familiar with from the early films and then, you know, circumstances change. It somewhat shifts the course of events from that point," he explained. "It's not necessarily a sequel or a reboot. I don't even know how you brand it correctly. We're not remaking one of the early 'Terminator' movies. And it doesn't necessarily carry on from the point where we left off."
Could this be precisely why the fifth "Terminator" flick is called Genisys? After all, the word does refer to the "beginning."
ScreenRant had offered some explanations regarding the movie's title, which certainly holds clues about its plot.
"It could be that 'Genisys' refers to the name of a new high-tech manufacturing corporation," the site offered. "'Genisys' could also refer to an alternate version of Skynet, which shall be introduced in this new movie.
It's also possible that there might be a "Skynet-like AI entity known as 'Genisys,' or maybe a Judgement Day-esque event referred to as 'Genisys.'"
"Or maybe Paramount just decided that 'Terminator: Genisys' was a cooler title for a sci-fi movie than 'Terminator: Genesis.' Your guess is as good as ours, for the time being," ScreenRant wisecracked.
Meanwhile, J.K. Simmons had shared some bits of information about the upcoming flick, as he had recently completed filming with the fifth "Terminator" installment.
"It's a gigantic movie and that was such a surprise when they sent that to me and asked me to do it," he began telling ComingSoon.net. "I thought 'Well, obviously it's a gigantic movie and on that level, it's something most actors would want to be a part of, but is it just going to be the formulaic yadda-yadda-yadda then cut to the stuff blowing up?'"
"But I found the script to be really much more intelligent and fun and funny and well-rounded and heart-felt," he continued. "It's a love story. It's a really interesting script. They got great actors. I wrapped that in August, so that was another movie that ended up being really satisfying on all levels. I have a much smaller part in that but it was really a fun thing to be a part of."
"Terminator: Genisys" will also star Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke (as Sarah Connor), and Jason Clarke (John Connor). The film will hit theaters on July 1, 2015.
