Finally, thanks to Michael Strahan, "Magic Mike 2" will now feature an African American stripper. And it appears fans are applauding his casting.
Two years after the "Live with Kelly and Michael" host showed off his stripper moves while Channing Tatum was on the show to promote the original "Magic Mike," Michael has found himself officially part of the "Magic Mike XXL" gang, and he made this revelation himself on the same show.
"I'm about to do something that started as a joke here on the show, when I was just here as a co-host one day and we had a guest here who did a movie, and I decided to reenact some of his movie," he was quoted by People as saying on Monday. "So then he kept messing around with me."
"The wardrobe guy called me the other day ... and after the conversation, I said, 'Why did he even bother to call me to talk about wardrobe, 'cause apparently there ain't nothin' to be worn!'" the former NFL star joked. "It's like kind of a thong thing. I don't know if I'm necessarily hairy on the back end, but maybe I do need to be waxed."
Since Michael's humorous stripping stunt in 2012, Channing would "often ask Michael if he was interested in having a role in the sequel whenever he would appear on the morning show" as a running joke, the Daily Mail noted.
"You don't have to answer right now, but I need a hard answer, would you be in the movie?" Channing asked the former athlete back in 2012. "Yes! ...Are you kidding? I've been working out. I've been waiting," Michael, who has no dancing experience, responded, as noted by ET.
It looks like the sportsman will now be adding one more feather to his cap, which already has "athlete" and "TV host" on it.
It can be recalled that Michael had stripped for People in the magazine's "Magic Mike-inspired Sexiest Man Alive photo shoot in 2013," the publication said. He said at the time that "Michael Jackson classics" are the kind that makes him do his go-to dance moves. "If I hear an old Michael Jackson, you better watch out, I might moonwalk on you," he said.
Looks like the man's dream has finally come true - will we see him grooving to MJ's hits on the sequel?
Entertainment Weekly has also reported that Donald Glover and Elizabeth Banks, aside from Michael, will be joining the "Magic Mike XXL" cast. "The trio join the previously announced group of returning and new stars including Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, Amber Heard, Andie MacDowell, and Jada Pinkett Smith," the entertainment news source said.
The "Magic Mike" sequel will be in theaters on July 1, 2015.
