Tony Parker, the prized point guard of the San Antonio Spurs, thinks his team will repeat as NBA Champions come June next year when the NBA 2014-15 season draws to a close.
According to Yahoo! Sports' interview on Parker, the SAS guard openly expressed his optimism on his team's chances of making a repeat as champions.
Since the shortened NBA season in 1999-2000, the Spurs have won the NBA championship five times. However, none of the previous four times was the team able to go back-to-back. Fansided notes that for the last decade and a half, it almost has been an annual tradition to have the Spurs as one of the teams to beat before the season starts, if not the prohibitive favorite to take home the Larry O'brien trophy at the end. However, it has also been common for people to overlook the team's greatness.
With the NBA training camp opening in less than two weeks, there are honest-to-god conversations happening about the Spurs and their chances of winning it all once more. "The hype about the young and novel is still there, but the champs have their place in the news cycle, and they're not surrendering it. That's a cool thing to see," observes Fansided.
The latest interview with Parker is an indication that the Spurs is hell-bent on striving to repeat a championship, especially when he said that he's "dying to win a repeat title for the first time ever."
"For us to repeat would be unbelievable. We had four tries to do that, and we never achieved it. Just that alone, we should be motivated by that. I know Coach Pop is going to be on us from day one," states Parker.
Parker also talked about Tim Duncan, whom he thought would be retiring after last year's NBA season. But the 38-year-old player is apparently not done yet, and is in fact eyeing a sixth NBA ring that would put him in the company of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, plus several other Celtics and Lakers greats.
While a lot of new plots have mushroomed in the NBA in the past months, Fansided believes that Spurs will still be among those to watch our for this season. The site concluded, "There's nothing wrong with obsessing over Lebron James, Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, D-Rose, Kevin Durant, Westbrook, Griffin, Paul, Davis or any of the other megastar NBA players who are sure to make this upcoming season compelling. But this year, there's an added twist: We won't forget the Spurs while we're at it. They've earned our respect and then some, and for us, it's a joy to give it."
