When the season finale of "How I Met Your Mother" was aired, some fans of the show had cursed the series for going in the direction they were not buying. In the show conclusion, Buzzfeed said Ted (Josh Radnor), finally meets the Mother (Cristin Milioti) after several teasers in the show. The series introduced the woman behind the yellow umbrella whom Ted has struck a conversation with at a train station following the wedding of his first love Robin (Cobie Smulders) to one of his best friends Marshall (Neil Patrick Harris).
However, fans were not too happy that the Mother, who was introduced in the show as Tracy, only had a few minutes of screen time. Although the finale showcased how she gave Ted all that he wanted, including having kids, not all were pleased with the fact that the show killed her off. An older, graying Ted later on concludes his story with his now teenage children, Penny (Lyndsy Fonseca) and Luke (David Henrie), and moves on with an also graying Robin, hinting a reconciliation between the two former lovers.
However, an alternate ending of the show has been leaked online, no doubt in promotion for the "How I Met Your Mother" complete series box set, which will be released on September 23. Although 20th Century Fox has yet to confirm whether the video was indeed authentic, show creator Craig Thomas might have actually teased that there is such an ending back in April.
He wrote on his Twitter account, "We love all #HIMYM fans and respect all opinions...so we want to share that Plan B with you on the Series Box set."
Since the show has already ended, there is a least possibility for CBS to do a special to air the alternate ending on television. US Weekly quoted show co-creator Carter Bays, who explained earlier why CBS decided to go with the Ted-Robin ending.
"16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings," he wrote. "We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too," he said.
Sithbot for Big Shiny Robot was clearly a fan with the alternate ending, but thought that the original ending was a more suitable one for the show. He argued in a new blog post, "Not letting Tracy die didn't follow through with the hints they'd been dropping for over a season. Her death really resonated and delivered a huge emotional impact that last ten minutes or so really needed. While changing this meant that Ted obviously wouldn't get back together with Robin, it would have gutted the best part of the finale.
The only thing that was pulled off well was rolling credits right after Ted and Tracy met. I have gone back and forth about whether or not that's how the ending should have played out, and since the finale gave us enough of a view into how their lives turned out, it would have been perfect."
