We all know that Daryl Dixon of "The Walking Dead," portrayed by Norman Reedus, is one of television's formidable characters. He can shoot with a bow and arrow and he has a very uptight personality, which is understandable since the show is set in a world infested with flesh-eating zombies. But who knew that Daryl has a secret?
When "The Walking Dead" creator, Robert Kirkman, sat down with ComicBook.com about Daryl's character development on the show, the world was not ready for his revelation just yet.
Kirkman said at that time, "All I can say is that it's been discussed. We have very specific ideas about Daryl's sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there's ever a quiet period in the show where he's not consistently distracted by crossbowing...we'll tackle it in the show."
AMC series showrunner, Scott Gimple, has also chimed in about Daryl's sexual orientation storyline to TVLine.
He said, "We know all sorts of things about the characters that we haven't revealed. [But] we're not holding back information on Daryl's sexuality as any sort of big reveal. The fact that there's still a question as to what Daryl's orientation is in Season 5 absolutely speaks to Daryl's character; he is a very guarded, very closed-off individual in a lot of ways. We have been able to see him ever so slowly open up and show the other characters aspect by aspect as to what makes him tick. That's been a very satisfying journey for all of us on the creative side to portray. [And] he's still on that journey."
On the other hand, the "gay" angle might be a tease for fans who would be wishing for a new story line as "The Walking Dead" is set to debut its fifth season this October. Nonetheless, one would hope that Daryl's revelation will seamlessly tie whatever loose strings the show writers will be having on the show as the story progresses, as Cinemablend observed.
Meanwhile, as TV Line noted, Gimple did confirm that they would be introducing a gay male character in the show. However, it remains a question on whether they would be reintroducing Reedus' character or hire a new actor to fill in, perhaps his lover?
"This is a character who is going to continue to grow closer to the other characters. [and] let his guard down, and let them see just who he is, in every way," Gimple said.
