Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe expressed confidence that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will have the best performance of his career when he collides with Marcos Maidana in their rematch on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In an interview with BoxingScene on Wednesday, Ellerbe admitted that Maidana is oozing with confidence at this point after giving Mayweather arguably the toughest fight of his career during their first showdown.
"I think Maidana is coming into this fight with a tremendous amount of confidence," Ellerbe said. "Coming off the Broner fight where he looked sensational. He's coming into this Mayweather fight [after] he put on an outstanding performance. And he's coming out of there saying things like 'Floyd can't punch' and Floyd was not all he thought he was going to be."
But while they are aware of Maidana's confidence level heading into the rematch, Ellerbe reiterated that Mayweather, who will put his perfect 46-0 record on the line, is also motivated to score a convincing win to prove that his majority decision win in their first fight was no fluke.
"Floyd is extremely motivated to put on a spectacular performance," Ellerbe said. "I think this one right here will be Floyd's best performance to date."
Maidana, who carries a 35-4 record with 31 knockouts, has been throwing verbal jabs to Mayweather and his camp over the past several weeks.
In an interview with BoxingNews24 on Tuesday, the 31-year-old Buenos Aires, Argentina-native said that he will look to knock Mayweather out in their upcoming rematch, and challenged the reigning pound-for-pound king to "fight like a man."
"I already know the mistakes Mayweather makes and I'll be ready to take advantage this time. I hope Mayweather will fight like a man and stand in front of me again," Maidana said. "He says he wants to please the fans, so we'll see. The times when he was able to get away is because I let him. This time, I won't get tired and I'll force him to fight. Stop crying like a little bitch and fight."
Ellerbe said that "talking trash" is not doing Maidana any good, saying that it is just making the unbeaten champion more determined to silence the Argentine with a dominating performance.
"Floyd is looking extremely sharp. His preparation is unbelievable. He's extremely motivated for this fight. And I think a lot has to do with Floyd not paying attention to the critics but surprisingly, Maidana has been talking a lot of trash," Ellerbe said. "So come September 13th, it's going to be interesting. It's going to be quite interesting because all that talking, [Maidana's] got to fight."
According to the World Boxing Council, Mayweather will defend both his WBC welterweight and light middleweight titles against Maidana. The 37-year-old will also put his World Boxing Organization welterweight title on the line.
