Day 13 of the U.S. Open marks the end of the women's matches, with the final match between Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and American Serena Williams scheduled for the evening. Four top-seeded male players will also battle it out in the quest to reach Saturday's final men's singles match.
No. 1-ranked Azarenka defeated Russian Maria Sharapova in three sets 3-6, 6-2 and 6-4 on Friday. No. 3-ranked Sharapova did not make the match easy for Azarenka, who was forced to play for two hours and 42 minutes in sweltering heat, Bleacher Report said.
In the second semifinals match of the day, No. 4-ranked Williams demolished Italian Sara Errani in two sets 6-1 and 6-2 that lasted just over an hour. According to Bleacher Report, No. 10-ranked Errani told reporters, "She's not unbeatable. No one is unbeatable. Anyone can lose. But if she plays well, she's the best in the world."
Azarenka and Williams will battle it out for the Grand Slam title on Saturday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. According to Bleacher Report, Williams is the favorite for the title and if she manages to secure the Grand Slam, she will be the first woman to win the Wimbledon and U.S. Open championships in the same year since 2002. Williams was, unsurprisingly, the last woman to accomplish that feat in 2002.
On the men's side, Czech Tomas Berdych will play against Scotsman Andy Murray for his chance at the finals. No. 6-ranked Berdych played a surprising upset against No. 1-ranked Swiss Roger Federer during the quarterfinals earlier this week.
Spaniard David Ferrer and Serbian Novak Djokovic will play after the Berdych-Murray match for their chance at the finals match. No. 4-ranked Ferrer and No. 2-ranked Djokovic will play at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The winners from each semifinals men's singles match will advance to the finals match on Sunday.
