Although trades and rookies are the current focal point of the NBA offseason, fans and experts cannot contain themselves to start ranking their favorite picks to win MVP in the 2014-2015 season.
In the past season, LeBron James was the odds-on favorite to win NBA MVP. However, Kevin Durant had a stellar display which earned him the title. During the playoffs, Kawhi Leonard unleashed his raw potential to show that he was the man for the job, helping the San Antonio Spurs win another NBA championship. In the upcoming season, Spurs fans are hoping that point guard, Tony Parker, might also take home the Finals MVP trophy.
Parker last won the trophy in 2007.
In a report by ESPN.com, an ESPN Forecast team ranked their top choices to win MVP for the 2014-15 NBA season but Parker was nowhere in the list. The top five in order were LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. There are two point guards in the list who are both a lot younger than Tony Parker, although the French has a lot more experience and championship rings.
According to 48minutesofhell.com, years ago, Parker talked about becoming a legitimate candidate. He said, "Every time somebody asks me that question I have to laugh. That's LeBron and Durant stuff."
A poll was also released on Slumz.com and it was all about who fans believe will win MVP in the upcoming season. James, Durant, Rose and Bryant garnered the top votes. Parker, however, only managed 0.67% or 1 vote.
In an aging San Antonio Spurs, Parker is among the youngest in the bunch at 31 years old. Although experts thought that either he or Tim Duncan would bring home the MVP Finals trophy in 2014, Leonard emerged as a true rising star.
Parker, however, continues to be the highest-paid in the group and is still a vital component in the excellent team dynamics that the Spurs are known for. Stats on NBA.com show that Parker averaged 16.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. He upped his points per game average in the playoffs with 17.4. When he won MVP in 2007, he averaged 20.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.
His numbers are actually not very far from his recent stats, which means that Parker, although not the favorite, has a reliable chance of winning the 2015 Finals MVP award. It may be far-fetched to expect him to win the regular season MVP, but knowing the Spurs' capacity to consistently enter the finals, the All-Star point guard usually does not go home empty-handed.
